Watch George “Spanky” McCurdy Drive 15-Piece Band in Tye Tribbett Tiny Desk Concert
Low Boy artist George “Spanky” McCurdy recently recorded an NPR Tiny Desk Concert with gospel singer and pastor Tye Tribbett. This groovy and energetic performance features an all-star 15-piece band ripping through six of Tribbett’s songs, including “No Way,” “Everything,” and “Be Alright.” McCurdy has worked with Tribbett for more than 15 years, appearing on multiple albums including Stand Out Love, Victory Live! and Life.
For this show, McCurdy used a Lightweight Leather Daddy beater stained red with a black stripe and black leather. He says this stylish beater “takes so much pressure off my foot. I never do any gigs without my Low Boys. That’s automatic. The Lightweight beater gives me the extra attack. It helps my back, it helps my body and it’s really a blessing. Total control. When I first put it on, I was doing doubles and saying ‘am I really doing doubles that easily?’ The flat striking surface makes a world of difference.”
Besides his work with Tribbett, McCurdy had a long stint playing with Lady Gaga during “The Monster Ball Tour,” and has worked with everyone from rappers Sean “Diddy” Combs and Kanye West to soul singer Jill Scott.
